Age is another key factor. PIDs are often diagnosed in infancy or early childhood, as symptoms typically emerge when the immune system is still developing. However, some forms may remain undetected until adulthood, especially if the immunodeficiency is mild or presents with atypical symptoms. Early childhood exposure to common pathogens can reveal underlying immune defects, making age a critical consideration in risk assessment.

Environmental exposures contribute significantly to the risk profile for PIDs. Frequent exposure to infectious agents, especially in crowded or unsanitary conditions, can trigger recurrent or severe infections in susceptible individuals. Conversely, certain environmental factors may exacerbate underlying immune deficiencies. Additionally, other health conditions can influence the risk of primary immunodeficiency. Children with congenital anomalies, autoimmune disorders, or chromosomal abnormalities—such as Down syndrome—are at higher risk for developing PIDs. These conditions may reflect broader immune dysregulation or genetic predispositions that affect immune system development.

Immunizations and infections also play a complex role. While vaccines are vital for preventing infectious diseases, live vaccines may pose risks to individuals with certain immunodeficiencies, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis. Recurrent infections, particularly of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, are hallmark signs that should prompt evaluation for underlying immunodeficiency, especially in those with known risk factors.
