Physiotherapists also teach patients joint protection techniques to avoid overstretching or undue stress on fragile tissues. Additionally, bracing or splinting may be used temporarily to support unstable joints or prevent injuries during high-risk activities.
Pain management is another critical component. Many individuals with EDS experience persistent musculoskeletal pain due to joint instability and tissue fragility. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), analgesics, and sometimes stronger medications are prescribed to control chronic pain. In some cases, alternative therapies such as acupuncture or biofeedback may provide supplementary relief.
Skin fragility and wound healing issues are addressed through careful wound care protocols. Patients are advised to minimize trauma and use gentle skin care products. When surgical interventions are necessary, meticulous planning and gentle handling of tissues are vital to reduce the risk of poor healing or wound complications.
Vascular EDS, a more severe form, involves the risk of life-threatening arterial or organ rupture. Regular monitoring through imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI is essential for early detection of vascular issues. In some cases, medications like beta-blockers (e.g., celiprolol) have been explored to reduce vascular stress, although their use is tailored to individual risk profiles.
Psychological support plays a significant role, given the chronic nature of the syndrome and the impact on daily life. Support groups, counseling, and education empower patients to adapt to their condition and advocate for themselves within the healthcare system.
Research into gene therapy and targeted molecular treatments is ongoing, but as of now, management remains supportive and preventative. Advances in understanding EDS are promising and may lead to more definitive treatments in the future. Meanwhile, a proactive, multidisciplinary approach remains the best strategy for managing the complex symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and enhancing patient quality of life.
