Because mitochondrial diseases are complex and heterogeneous, a multidisciplinary approach involving neurologists, geneticists, and metabolic specialists is essential for accurate diagnosis and management.

Currently, there is no cure for mitochondrial diseases, and treatment primarily focuses on alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life. Supportive therapies include physical therapy to maintain muscle strength and mobility, occupational therapy to assist with daily activities, and speech therapy if communication is affected. Some children benefit from nutritional interventions or vitamin and supplement regimens aimed at optimizing mitochondrial function, such as coenzyme Q10, B-vitamins, or antioxidants. In certain cases, medications may be prescribed to control seizures or cardiac issues.

Management of mitochondrial diseases in children requires careful monitoring and personalized care plans. As research progresses, new therapeutic options are emerging, including experimental gene therapies and mitochondrial replacement techniques, which hold promise for future treatment. Nonetheless, early diagnosis and intervention are crucial in helping children reach their full potential and manage symptoms effectively.
