In contrast, diseases like rheumatoid arthritis involve immune cells attacking joint linings, leading to inflammation, pain, and deformity. Similarly, Type 1 diabetes results from immune destruction of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. These are unequivocally autoimmune because of the immune system’s misguided attack on self-tissues.

Therefore, when considering which conditions are autoimmune, it is essential to differentiate between immune responses that target the body’s own tissues and those targeting external threats or harmless substances. Recognizing this distinction helps in understanding disease mechanisms and guiding appropriate treatment strategies.

In summary, while many disorders involve the immune system, not all are classified as autoimmune diseases. Allergies and infections are notable examples of immune responses that are not autoimmune.
