While allergies involve immune system activation, they are not considered autoimmune because the immune response targets external substances, not the body’s own tissues.

Furthermore, immune deficiencies—such as primary immunodeficiency disorders—occur when components of the immune system are underactive or absent, leading to increased susceptibility to infections. These are also not autoimmune diseases because the problem is a lack of immune response, not an inappropriate attack on self.

In addition to these, some conditions like celiac disease are sometimes debated regarding their classification. Celiac disease involves an immune response to gluten, leading to intestinal damage. While it does involve immune mechanisms, it is often categorized as an autoimmune disease because of the immune-mediated destruction of intestinal tissue, but some consider it a gluten allergy or hypersensitivity as well.

To clarify, a disease not classified as an autoimmune disorder would be something like a bacterial infection, viral illness, or immune deficiency. For instance, bacterial pneumonia, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, involves infection and immune response but is not autoimmune. Similarly, conditions like multiple sclerosis are autoimmune because they involve immune-mediated destruction of nerve tissue, whereas diseases like infectious mononucleosis caused by the Epstein-Barr virus are infectious diseases involving the immune system but are not autoimmune.
