Understanding which autoimmune diseases can cause seizures is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective management.

One of the most recognized autoimmune conditions associated with seizures is autoimmune encephalitis. This condition involves inflammation of the brain caused by the immune system attacking brain tissue, often targeting specific neuronal surface proteins or receptors. Among the subtypes, anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is notable. Patients frequently present with psychiatric symptoms, cognitive disturbances, and seizures. Similarly, antiphospholipid syndrome predisposes individuals to blood clots, which can lead to stroke and subsequent seizures.

Recognizing autoimmune diseases as potential causes of seizures is critical, especially in patients with other signs of autoimmune pathology. Diagnostic procedures such as blood tests for specific autoantibodies, MRI scans, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis are instrumental in establishing the diagnosis. Treatment typically involves immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or plasma exchange to control immune activity, alongside anticonvulsant medications to manage seizures.

Understanding the connection between autoimmune diseases and seizures emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, combining neurology, rheumatology, and immunology expertise. Early diagnosis and targeted therapy can significantly improve outcomes, reduce neurological damage, and enhance quality of life for affected individuals.
