VCU Lymphedema Clinic – Expert Diagnosis and Treatment

VCU Lymphedema Clinic – Expert Diagnosis and Treatment Lymphedema is a condition where protein-rich fluid builds up in tissues, often due to genetic factors or acquired causes like surgery, trauma, or cancer treatments. This swelling can lead to discomfort and requires specialized care to manage effectively.

Breast cancer survivors are particularly affected, with about 20% developing this condition after lymph node removal. Other cancer-related cases, such as gynecologic or head/neck cancers, also contribute to its prevalence.

VCU Lymphedema Clinic – Expert Diagnosis and Treatment Diagnosing this condition involves a thorough clinical evaluation and assessment of the lymphatic system. VCU Lymphedema Clinic – Expert Diagnosis and Treatment Innovative techniques and proven therapies offer relief for persistent swelling. These methods are designed to improve lymphatic flow, reduce discomfort, and enhance overall quality of life. Our approach combines traditional and modern treatments to ensure comprehensive care.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

CDT is a highly effective treatment that includes four key components: VCU Lymphedema Clinic – Expert Diagnosis and Treatment

  • Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD): Gentle massage techniques to stimulate lymphatic flow.
  • Compression Therapy: Use of multilayer bandaging or gradient compression garments to reduce swelling.
  • Therapeutic Exercise: Customized exercises to improve circulation and lymphatic function.
  • Skin Care: Specialized regimens to prevent infections and maintain skin health.

Certified therapists guide patients through each phase, ensuring optimal results.

Innovative Therapies and Techniques

In addition to CDT, we offer advanced therapies to enhance treatment outcomes:

  • Flexitouch Systems: Automated devices that mimic MLD for consistent lymphatic drainage.
  • Intermittent Pneumatic Compression: Devices that use air pressure to reduce swelling and improve circulation.

These technologies are combined with personalized care plans to address individual needs. Our focus on infection prevention and skin care ensures long-term success in managing chronic swelling.

Conditions We Treat at the VCU Lymphedema Clinic

Swelling disorders can stem from various underlying conditions, each requiring unique treatments. Our team specializes in addressing both cancer-related and chronic swelling issues, ensuring patients receive the care they need.

Cancer-Related Swelling

Many patients experience swelling after cancer treatments. For example, post-mastectomy swelling is common among breast cancer survivors. Radiation-induced fibrosis can also lead to persistent discomfort. VCU Lymphedema Clinic – Expert Diagnosis and Treatment

Other oncology cases include swelling caused by melanoma or lymphoma treatments. These secondary conditions often require tailored therapies to manage effectively.

Chronic Swelling Disorders

Chronic swelling can result from conditions like lymphorrhea or phlebolipolymphedema. About 40% of patients also have chronic venous insufficiency, which complicates treatment.

We differentiate between lipedema and lymphoedema, as their management approaches vary. Lipedema involves fat accumulation, while lymphoedema focuses on fluid retention. VCU Lymphedema Clinic – Expert Diagnosis and Treatment

Complex cases with combined vascular and lymphatic pathologies are also addressed. Our team uses advanced techniques to ensure comprehensive care.
