In chronic management, some patients benefit from disease-modifying therapies such as hydroxyurea, which increases fetal hemoglobin levels, decreasing the frequency and severity of crises. For severe or recurrent crises, other supportive treatments or even stem cell transplants might be considered, although these are typically reserved for specialized cases.

Preventive measures are equally important in managing sickle cell disease. Regular medical check-ups, vaccination against preventable diseases, and avoiding known triggers can significantly reduce the frequency of crises. Education about recognizing early symptoms and seeking prompt medical attention can also mitigate complications.
