In addition to chelators, zinc therapy is another cornerstone of Wilson’s disease treatment, especially in the maintenance phase or as a first-line therapy in asymptomatic patients. Zinc works by inducing metallothionein in intestinal cells, which binds copper and reduces its absorption from the diet. Zinc therapy is considered safe for long-term use and is often employed to stabilize the disease after initial copper reduction.

Dietary management also plays a supportive role. Patients are advised to limit foods high in copper, such as shellfish, nuts, chocolate, and organ meats, especially during the initial treatment phase. Adherence to the prescribed medication regimen and dietary restrictions is vital for effective management.

In cases where medical therapy does not adequately control copper levels or organ damage becomes severe, liver transplantation may be considered. It can restore normal copper metabolism but is generally reserved for advanced cases with liver failure.

Throughout the treatment process, regular follow-up is crucial. This includes blood tests to monitor copper levels, liver function, and potential side effects, as well as neurological assessments if neurological symptoms are present.
