Antifibrotic medications such as pirfenidone or nintedanib are commonly prescribed for IPF and can be initiated relatively quickly after diagnosis. The initiation and monitoring of these treatments typically unfold over the subsequent weeks, as patients are evaluated for drug tolerability and side effects.

Additionally, supportive therapies like oxygen supplementation, pulmonary rehabilitation, and vaccination are integrated into the care plan. For some patients, lung transplantation becomes a consideration, which involves a separate and often prolonged evaluation process, including medical assessments, psychological evaluations, and logistical planning. This process can extend the overall timeline by months.
