Contaminated water sources and air pollution can contribute to this risk, particularly in regions with lax safety regulations or inadequate environmental controls.
Although asbestos exposure is the primary cause, it is important to note that not everyone exposed to asbestos will develop mesothelioma. The development of this cancer depends on various factors, including the intensity and duration of exposure, genetic predisposition, and overall health. Some individuals may carry genetic mutations that make their mesothelial cells more susceptible to transformation after asbestos fiber exposure.
Preventive measures are critical in reducing mesothelioma risk. These include strict regulation and banning of asbestos use in many countries, proper handling and disposal of asbestos-containing materials, and protective gear for workers in at-risk industries. For individuals who suspect past exposure, regular health screenings and medical check-ups can aid early detection, which is vital given mesothelioma’s long latency period—often 20 to 50 years after exposure.
