Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue, which provides structural support to many organs and tissues. As the disease progresses into the early stages, more noticeable symptoms may emerge. Cardiovascular complications become more evident, with patients experiencing issues such as mitral valve prolapse, which can lead to heart murmurs or palpitations. The aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart, may begin to enlarge or weaken, increasing the risk of dilation. Skeletal features become more pronounced, with increased height, long limbs, and joint hypermobility leading to joint dislocations or pain. Eye problems can also develop, including lens dislocation (ectopia lentis), myopia, or early signs of retinal detachment. During this stage, patients might start experiencing symptoms that prompt medical evaluation and diagnosis.

The advanced stage of Marfan syndrome involves significant health risks and often requires intensive medical management. Cardiovascular complications become more severe, with aortic dilation potentially progressing to aneurysm or dissection, which can be life-threatening. Regular imaging and close monitoring are essential to detect these changes early. Surgical intervention may be necessary to repair or replace damaged parts of the aorta or heart valves. Skeletal deformities may become more pronounced, sometimes requiring orthopedic procedures to correct severe scoliosis or chest wall abnormalities. Eye issues, particularly retinal detachment, may require surgical intervention to prevent vision loss. In this stage, the impact of the disease on daily life increases, and multidisciplinary care becomes crucial to prolong life and improve its quality.

Throughout the different stages of Marfan syndrome, the focus remains on early detection, regular monitoring, and proactive management to prevent serious complications. Advances in surgical techniques, medical therapies like beta-blockers or angiotensin receptor blockers, and genetic counseling have significantly improved outcomes. Patients who are diagnosed early and followed closely can lead active, fulfilling lives despite the challenges posed by the disease. Ultimately, understanding the progression of Marfan syndrome allows patients and healthcare providers to work together in tailoring treatment plans that address the evolving nature of the disorder.
