At this stage, supportive care becomes the cornerstone of treatment. Emphasis is placed on maintaining comfort, preventing complications, and enhancing quality of life. This may include physical therapy to preserve joint mobility, occupational therapy for adaptive techniques, and speech therapy. Nutritional support, sometimes through feeding tubes, helps address swallowing difficulties. Pain management and psychological support are also vital, as patients often face emotional and mental health challenges stemming from progressive disability.
While no cure exists for Friedreich’s ataxia, research into potential treatments continues, focusing on gene therapy, antioxidants, and neuroprotective agents. For now, managing advanced stages revolves around symptom control and supportive care, aiming to maximize independence and dignity for patients facing the profound impacts of this relentless disease.
