More recently, the real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) assay has emerged as a highly specific and sensitive test, detecting prions directly in CSF samples. The availability of such advanced assays improves early detection accuracy, enabling clinicians to distinguish CJD from other neurodegenerative diseases more effectively.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) can sometimes show characteristic patterns like periodic sharp wave complexes, but these are more typical in later stages of the disease. As a result, EEG findings are often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tools rather than as standalone indicators for early detection.

While there is no cure for CJD, early diagnosis plays a vital role in patient management. It allows for better symptomatic care, planning for supportive therapies, and providing families with crucial information about disease progression. Moreover, early detection has public health implications, as it helps prevent potential iatrogenic transmission through contaminated medical equipment or transplantation.

Research continues to explore promising biomarkers and imaging techniques for even earlier detection of CJD. Advances in molecular diagnostics and understanding of prion biology hold the potential to enable pre-symptomatic diagnosis, which could revolutionize disease management and containment strategies in the future.
