Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides detailed visualization of soft tissues, including discs, nerve roots, and the spinal cord, aiding in identifying nerve compression and other complications.

Management of degenerative lumbar spine changes aims to alleviate pain, improve function, and prevent further deterioration. Conservative treatments are usually the first line, including physical therapy to strengthen the core muscles, medications such as NSAIDs for pain relief, and activity modifications. In some cases, epidural steroid injections may be used to reduce inflammation and nerve irritation.

When conservative approaches fail, surgical options may be considered. Procedures like discectomy, laminectomy, or spinal fusion aim to decompress nerve roots and stabilize the spine. The decision for surgery depends on the severity of symptoms, the extent of degeneration, and the patient’s overall health.

Preventative strategies focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, proper ergonomics, weight management, and avoiding repetitive strain to the lower back. Recognizing early symptoms and seeking prompt medical attention can help manage the condition effectively and enhance quality of life.
