The symptoms of a compression fracture can vary depending on the severity and location of the fracture. Common signs include sudden onset of back pain that worsens with movement, height loss over time, and a stooped posture or kyphosis, which is a forward curvature of the upper back. In more severe cases, nerve compression may lead to neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs.

Diagnosing a compression fracture typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies. X-rays are the initial tool used to visualize the vertebral bodies and identify fractures. Sometimes, further imaging such as MRI or CT scans is necessary to assess the extent of the injury and determine whether there is nerve involvement or other complications.

Treatment strategies for compression fractures aim to alleviate pain, stabilize the spine, and prevent further fractures. Conservative management often includes pain medications, activity modification, and physical therapy. Bracing may also be recommended to support the spine during healing. In cases where pain persists or the fracture causes significant deformity or neurological symptoms, more invasive procedures may be considered.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are minimally invasive procedures that can quickly relieve pain and restore vertebral height. Vertebroplasty involves injecting bone cement into the fractured vertebra, providing stabilization. Kyphoplasty additionally employs a balloon to create space within the vertebral body before cement injection, which can help correct deformity and restore some lost height.

Preventing future fractures involves addressing underlying conditions such as osteoporosis through medications, dietary supplements like calcium and vitamin D, and lifestyle modifications including weight-bearing exercise. Maintaining bone health is crucial, especially in high-risk populations, to reduce the incidence of compression fractures.

Overall, while compression fractures can be debilitating, advances in diagnosis and treatment have significantly improved outcomes. Early recognition and appropriate management are essential for minimizing pain, preventing deformity, and maintaining mobility.
