Instead, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health organizations now advocate for dual therapy with ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin, often combined with azithromycin. This combination has been shown to be more effective in overcoming resistant strains and reducing the risk of treatment failure.

Diagnostic testing plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate treatment. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are commonly used to confirm gonorrhea infections. When resistance data is available, healthcare providers may perform susceptibility testing to guide therapy. In regions where ciprofloxacin resistance remains low, it may still be considered for treatment, but only under careful medical supervision and after confirming susceptibility.

The evolving resistance landscape underscores the importance of ongoing surveillance and the development of new antibiotics. Researchers are actively exploring alternative treatments, and public health initiatives emphasize preventive measures such as safe sex practices and regular screening. Patients are advised not to self-medicate and to seek prompt medical attention for suspected gonorrhea infections.

In summary, while Cipro was once a reliable treatment for gonorrhea, its efficacy has significantly declined due to rising antibiotic resistance. Current guidelines favor combination therapies with more potent and resistance-proof antibiotics.
