Geographical location and ethnicity are noteworthy risk factors. Behcet’s is predominantly observed along the ancient Silk Road regions, including Turkey, Iran, Japan, and the Mediterranean basin. This distribution suggests that environmental exposures combined with genetic predispositions influence disease prevalence. Interestingly, the disease is relatively rare in Western countries, which supports the notion that both genetic and environmental factors are intertwined in its development.

Gender appears to influence risk as well, with some studies indicating that males are more likely to develop severe manifestations of Behcet’s Disease, such as eye inflammation or vascular involvement. Conversely, women may experience milder symptoms, although this varies across populations. Hormonal influences might modulate immune responses, contributing to these differences.

Other potential risk factors include smoking and certain lifestyle choices that can influence immune function and vascular health. While not conclusively proven, these factors may exacerbate the disease’s progression or severity. Additionally, age plays a role, as symptoms typically emerge in young adults between the ages of 20 and 40, highlighting a window of heightened susceptibility.
