These images may reveal atrophy in the caudate nucleus and putamen—areas of the brain affected early in Huntington’s disease. However, imaging findings are not solely diagnostic and serve more as supplementary tools.

Psychiatric evaluation is also vital, as many patients exhibit early behavioral and mood disturbances, including depression, irritability, or anxiety. Recognizing these symptoms can help in early detection and comprehensive management planning.

It is crucial to counsel patients and families throughout the diagnostic process, explaining the implications of genetic testing and potential outcomes. Pre-test counseling focuses on understanding the hereditary nature of the disease, possible psychological impacts, and the implications for family members. Post-test counseling addresses the results, prognosis, and options for future planning, including genetic counseling for relatives who might also be at risk.
