The causes of valvular heart disease are diverse, often involving congenital anomalies, degenerative processes, infections, rheumatic fever, and other systemic diseases.

Congenital valvular abnormalities are present at birth and can lead to either stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage). Conditions such as bicuspid aortic valve are common congenital anomalies, often remaining asymptomatic until later in life when degenerative changes occur.
