Eye-related symptoms are also significant early markers. Marfan syndrome can lead to lens dislocation (ectopia lentis), where the eye’s lens shifts from its normal position. If untreated, progressive dislocation or other ocular complications might develop, emphasizing the importance of regular eye examinations for early detection.

The cardiovascular system is often the most concerning aspect of Marfan syndrome. Early signs of disease progression in this area include dilation or enlargement of the aorta—the main blood vessel that supplies blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Aortic dilation may be asymptomatic initially but can gradually lead to an increased risk of aortic aneurysm or dissection, which are life-threatening emergencies. Subtle signs such as a widened pulse pressure or a heart murmur may be detected during routine physical examinations. Over time, imaging studies like echocardiograms can reveal progressive dilation, prompting early intervention.

Other less obvious early signs include fatigue, shortness of breath, or palpitations, which may be related to developing valvular heart issues or aortic complications. These symptoms often warrant further investigation, especially in individuals with known family history of Marfan syndrome.

Genetic counseling and regular monitoring are essential components of managing Marfan syndrome. Early detection of disease progression allows healthcare providers to implement appropriate medical therapies—such as beta-blockers or angiotensin receptor blockers—to slow aortic dilation. In some cases, surgical intervention may become necessary to repair or replace affected parts of the aorta or affected skeletal and eye structures.
