On the other hand, passive immunotherapy involves directly providing the immune components—such as antibodies or immune cells—to the patient. Instead of stimulating the immune system to produce its own response, passive immunotherapy supplies ready-made immune molecules that can immediately act against the disease. This approach offers rapid protection or treatment, especially in cases where the immune system is compromised or unable to mount an effective response. Monoclonal antibodies are a common example, used extensively in cancer therapy to target specific molecules on tumor cells. Another example includes the administration of immune globulin preparations to provide immediate immunity against certain infections. Passive immunotherapy is often used in situations requiring urgent intervention, such as during outbreaks of infectious diseases or in immunocompromised patients.

One of the key distinctions between active and passive immunotherapy lies in the duration of their effects. Active immunotherapy tends to have a longer-lasting impact because it induces the body’s own immune system to remember and respond to future encounters with the disease. However, it usually takes time—weeks or months—to develop a full immune response. Conversely, passive immunotherapy offers immediate protection or treatment but generally provides only short-term immunity, lasting weeks to a few months, because the supplied immune components are eventually broken down or eliminated by the body.

The choice between active and passive immunotherapy depends on various factors, including the disease type, the urgency of treatment, the patient’s immune status, and the desired duration of protection. Active immunotherapy is often preferred for long-term disease prevention, such as in vaccines against infectious diseases, while passive immunotherapy is invaluable in acute situations requiring immediate immune support.
