Cause of valvular heart disease Valvular heart disease (VHD) refers to any dysfunction or abnormality of one or more of the heart’s four valves: the mitral, aortic, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves. These valves are critical in maintaining unidirectional blood flow through the heart and the circulatory system. The causes of valvular heart disease are diverse, stemming from congenital issues, degenerative processes, infections, and other systemic conditions that affect the valves’ structure and function.
One of the most common causes of valvular heart disease, especially in developed countries, is degenerative valve disease, which often results from age-related wear and tear. As individuals age, the valves may thicken, calcify, or become less flexible. Calcification of the aortic valve, for instance, leads to aortic stenosis, restricting blood flow from the heart to the aorta, producing symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, and heart failure if untreated. Similarly, degenerative changes can lead to mitral valve prolapse or regurgitation, where the valve does not close properly, causing backflow of blood.
Rheumatic fever, a complication of untreated or poorly treated streptococcal infections, remains a significant cause of valvular heart disease worldwide. This autoimmune response results in inflammation and scarring of the valves, most commonly affecting the mitral and aortic valves. Over time, the valves can become thickened, fused, or deformed, impairing their function and leading to stenosis or regurgitation. Cause of valvular heart disease Infective endocarditis, an infection of the heart valves caused by bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms, can also damage valvular tissue. The infection can lead to the formation of vegetations—clusters of microorganisms, blood clots, and inflammatory cells—on the valve surfaces. These vegetations can cause destruction of the valve tissue, resulting in severe regurgitation or stenosis. Patients with pre-existing valve abnormalities or prosthetic valves are at increased risk for infective endocarditis.
Congenital valvular abnormalities are another significant cause, especially in younger populations. Conditions such as bicuspid aortic valve or pulmonary valve stenosis are present from birth and can lead to functional impairment of the valves as the individual ages.
