Cervical cancer screening has traditionally relied on the Pap smear, which detects precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix. In recent years, the HPV (human papillomavirus) test has become an important adjunct, either used alongside the Pap smear or as a primary screening tool. The combination of Pap and HPV testing is recommended for women aged 30 to 65 to identify those at higher risk for cervical cancer, prompting further diagnostic procedures if necessary.

For ovarian and uterine cancers, screening tests are less straightforward because these cancers often present with vague symptoms and lack reliable early detection methods. Nonetheless, pelvic exams are routinely performed during gynecological visits, and transvaginal ultrasound can visualize ovarian structures. Blood tests measuring tumor markers like CA-125 can support diagnosis in women with symptoms or abnormal imaging findings, although these markers are not definitive screening tools due to their limitations in sensitivity and specificity.

Breast and cervical screenings are supported by routine health check-ups, but women with specific risk factors might need genetic testing. Testing for inherited mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 can identify women at significantly increased risk for breast and ovarian cancers. Knowing one’s genetic predisposition allows for tailored screening strategies, preventive measures, or even risk-reducing surgeries.

In addition to screening, diagnostic tests like biopsies are essential when screening results are abnormal. A biopsy involves removing a small tissue sample for laboratory examination to confirm the presence of cancer cells. Advances in imaging-guided biopsies have made this process more accurate and less invasive.
