The general guideline suggests women start annual or biennial mammograms at age 40, though individual risk factors like family history or genetic predispositions may warrant earlier or more frequent screenings. Additionally, clinical breast exams performed by healthcare providers and regular breast self-awareness are vital in noticing unusual changes, such as lumps or skin alterations, warranting further investigation.

Lung cancer screening is recommended for women who are long-term smokers or have a significant history of smoking. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans have proven effective in detecting lung cancer at an early stage, often before symptoms develop. The guidelines typically recommend annual LDCT scans starting at age 55 and continuing until age 80 for those with at least a 30-pack-year smoking history. This targeted screening has been shown to reduce mortality in high-risk populations.

For women at risk of ovarian or colorectal cancer, specific screening tests are also recommended. While ovarian cancer screening is less straightforward due to the lack of reliable early detection methods, transvaginal ultrasound and blood tests for tumor markers like CA-125 may be advised for women at high risk, such as those with a family history or BRCA gene mutations. Colorectal cancer screening, including colonoscopy, should begin at age 45 or earlier based on personal and family history. Regular colonoscopies can detect precancerous polyps and early-stage cancers, significantly reducing mortality.

Participating in recommended screenings is complemented by lifestyle choices that can lower cancer risk, such as maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, limiting alcohol intake, and avoiding tobacco. Additionally, vaccination against HPV can prevent most cervical cancers and some other HPV-related cancers.
