Patients may also notice a tendency toward skin ulcerations or open sores that are slow to heal, increasing the risk of infections. In some cases, the skin may exhibit a bluish or dusky hue due to compromised blood flow or tissue necrosis, indicating the severity of the underlying tissue damage.

Researchers believe that mutations affecting collagen synthesis or regulation may contribute to the disease’s development. Topical treatments, including corticosteroids and moisturizers, can help manage skin thickening and prevent ulcerations. Systemic medications such as immunosuppressants or anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and immune response. In severe cases, surgical interventions might be necessary to correct deformities or remove necrotic tissue.
