This compression can result in symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, or radiating pain in the arms or legs.
The symptoms of degenerative spondylosis vary depending on the severity and location of the degeneration. Many individuals experience mild, intermittent back or neck pain that improves with rest or conservative treatments. However, when nerve compression occurs, symptoms can become chronic and more debilitating. Patients might report difficulty walking, muscle weakness, or loss of coordination, especially if the degeneration affects the cervical or lumbar regions.
Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies. X-rays can reveal bone spurs, disc space narrowing, and other structural changes. MRI scans provide detailed images of soft tissues, including discs and nerve roots, helping to identify nerve compression or inflammation.
Treatment options range from conservative to surgical approaches. Non-invasive methods include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, pain management techniques, and lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and exercise. In cases where conservative measures do not alleviate symptoms, surgical intervention may be considered. Common procedures include discectomy, laminectomy, or spinal fusion, aimed at decompressing nerves and stabilizing the spine.
Prevention and management focus on maintaining spinal health through regular exercise, good posture, and avoiding repetitive strain. Early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve outcomes and preserve mobility and quality of life.
